Indian Artificial Jewellery in Canada

Artificial jewellery, imitation jewellery, costume jewellery, fashion jewellery, gold-plated. Five names for roughly the same thing, and the differences between them actually matter when you are spending money.

What 'artificial jewellery' actually means

In South Asian usage, artificial jewellery means any piece that is not solid gold: most often a brass or alloy base finished with gold plating and set with kundan, polki, zircon, American diamond, moissanite or pearl. It is the default for modern weddings, not a downgrade from them: when a wedding runs four or five functions and every outfit needs its own look, almost nobody dresses all of it in 22K gold. What separates good artificial jewellery from bad is entirely in the execution: plating thickness, whether stones are set or glued, and how the back of the piece is finished.

Artificial, imitation, costume, fashion: the vocabulary

These terms get used interchangeably and it causes real confusion when shopping. Artificial and imitation jewellery are the standard South Asian terms for gold-plated pieces in traditional designs. Costume jewellery is the Western equivalent, though it usually implies lighter, more disposable pieces. Fashion jewellery is the retail-industry term. Gold-plated is the most precise of the lot because it describes the actual construction. If you are searching in Canada and not finding what you want, try the other words. Different retailers index under different vocabularies.

How to judge quality without a loupe

Three checks get you most of the way. Look at the back of the piece: proper back-work with visible settings signals a maker who expected the piece to be examined, while a flat sealed back often hides glue. Feel the weight: real plating over a solid alloy base has heft, and suspiciously light pieces are usually thinly plated. Tilt it under light: well-cut stones throw distinct flashes of light, while cheap ones go milky and flat. None of this requires expertise. Just a piece in your hand, which is the actual argument for buying somewhere you can visit.

Caring for it so it lasts

Gold plating wears through contact and chemistry, not time. Put jewellery on last, after perfume, hairspray and makeup, and take it off first. Store pieces in individual pouches rather than loose in a box where they abrade each other, ideally with a silica sachet if you are in a humid basement. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and never with jewellery-cleaning liquid, which strips plating. Treated this way, good gold-plated pieces stay photograph-ready for years rather than a season.

Buying artificial jewellery in Canada

The Canadian market is thinner than the Indian one and prices are higher, which pushes a lot of shoppers toward importing directly or buying through Instagram resellers. Both work until they don't. Sizing cannot be fixed from overseas, damaged pieces have no recourse, and duty on jewellery entering Canada is worth checking before you commit. Buying domestically costs more up front and removes those risks. We ship from Brampton across Canada, free over $150, and you can try before you buy if you are in the GTA.

Frequently asked questions

What is artificial jewellery?

In South Asian usage, artificial jewellery means any piece that is not solid gold: typically a brass or alloy base with gold plating, set with kundan, polki, zircon, American diamond, moissanite or pearl. It is also called imitation, costume, fashion or gold-plated jewellery. Quality varies widely, and depends mainly on plating thickness, whether stones are set or glued, and back-work finish.

Where can I buy Indian artificial jewellery online in Canada?

Outbox House ships Indian artificial and gold-plated jewellery across Canada from our studio in Brampton, Ontario, with free shipping on orders over $150. If you are in the Greater Toronto Area you can also book a free consultation and see pieces in person before buying.

How long does gold-plated jewellery last?

Well-made gold-plated jewellery stays photograph-ready for years if it is cared for: put it on after perfume and makeup, take it off first, store pieces separately in pouches, and wipe with a dry cloth rather than cleaning liquid. Plating wears through contact and chemicals, not through age.

Is artificial jewellery acceptable for a wedding?

It is the norm now, not the exception. Modern South Asian weddings run four or five functions, and dressing every one in 22K gold is beyond most budgets. Most brides use gold-plated jewellery across their functions, often including the wedding day itself, and reserve family gold for a single piece with sentimental weight.
