Buying Indian Bridal Jewelry in the US: Options and Duties
Where US brides can buy Indian bridal jewellery, how duties work since the US ended the $800 de minimis rule, and what to ask any seller first.
By Neha Parihar, founder

If you are a bride in the US looking for a chooda, kaleeras, a haath phool or a full bridal set, you have three main options. You can shop at a local South Asian store, order from India, or order from a seller in another country such as Canada. Each has real pros and cons.
Option 1: Local South Asian stores
Many US cities have South Asian shopping areas. Well known ones include Devon Avenue in Chicago, Oak Tree Road in Edison, New Jersey, and Jackson Heights and Richmond Hill in Queens, New York. Smaller cities often have a few stores near a gurdwara or mandir.
The upside
- You can try pieces on in person.
- You can match colours against your outfit on the spot.
- No shipping and no customs.
- Easy to return to the store for sizing or repairs.
The downside
- Choice depends on what the store has in stock.
- Not every city has a store nearby, so you may need to travel.
- Bridal pieces like kaleeras and choodas can sell out close to wedding season.
If you live near one of these areas, it is worth a visit, even if you buy elsewhere. Trying on bangles in person is the best way to learn your size.
Option 2: Ordering from India
India has the widest range of bridal jewellery anywhere. Many sellers ship to the US.
The upside
- Huge choice of styles.
- Some pieces are made to order.
The downside
- Shipping can take longer, and timing is hard to predict close to a wedding.
- Returns and size exchanges across borders are slow.
- Duties and fees may be added at delivery. See below.
Option 3: Ordering from Canada or another country
Some sellers outside the US, including in Canada, now sell to US buyers. Shipping times are often shorter than from India. The same questions about duties apply.
What changed with US duties
For years, many low value parcels entered the US duty free. This was the $800 de minimis rule. It was suspended for imports from all countries from August 29, 2025.
Since then, most parcels coming into the US can be charged duties, taxes and fees, whatever their value. How much depends on the item, where it was made and how it was shipped. The rules have changed more than once, so check current details with US Customs and Border Protection if you are unsure.
For buyers, the practical effect is simple. If a seller does not include duties in the price, you may be asked to pay when the parcel arrives. Carriers may also charge a fee for handling customs. The parcel may wait until you pay.
Why "duties paid" matters
Some sellers ship with duties paid. This means the seller pays US duties before the parcel arrives, and the price you see at checkout is what you pay.
- No surprise bill at the door.
- No delay while a parcel waits for payment.
- Easier to budget for a wedding with many costs.
If a seller does not say clearly, ask. "Do I pay anything on delivery?" should get a simple yes or no.
What to ask any seller
Before you order
- Is the price in US dollars?
- Are US duties and taxes included?
- What does shipping cost, and how long does it take to my state?
- Do you give a tracking number?
About the piece
- What is it made of, and what is the finish?
- What size is it, in inches or bangle size?
- Can you show me a photo or video on a hand, not just a flat lay?
About problems
- Can I exchange for a different size?
- How long do I have to return it?
- What happens if it arrives damaged?
Order early. Most brides should allow time for at least one size exchange before the wedding week.
Video consultations
A video call is a good middle ground between a store visit and ordering blind. Many sellers now offer one. You can see the colour under normal light, watch a piece being worn, check sizes against a bangle you already own (our bangle size guide explains how) and ask questions in real time. Have your outfit or a fabric swatch with you.
