North of the city
Atlanta's Indian community has grown fastest in the northern suburbs. In Forsyth County, the Asian Indian population went from 161 people in 2000 to more than 23,000 by 2023. Across the 11 county region, Asian Indians are now the largest Asian American group, at 147,512 people. Johns Creek's Diwali shows the same growth. About 12,000 people came in 2022 and about 20,000 in 2023. This year the city lists its celebration for Saturday, November 7, at The Boardwalk at Town Center.
Decatur, Norcross and Lilburn
The older South Asian shopping sits closer in. Patel Plaza on Church Street in Decatur is owned by Patel Brothers, whose grocery anchors it. Global Mall on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross has more than 60 stores, clothing and jewelry among them. In Lilburn, the BAPS mandir opened in 2007, built from more than 34,000 stone pieces carved in India. Sikh families gather at the Sikh Study Circle in Stone Mountain and the Guru Nanak Mission Society in Norcross. In May 2026 Jyot Singh became the first Sikh to win a Democratic primary for the Georgia House.
