Sacramento's Punjabi community
The Sikh Temple of West Sacramento estimates that around 40,000 Punjabi Sikhs live in the Sacramento Valley. The temple itself began in 1983 in a former church on Evergreen Avenue. It opened a larger prayer hall in 1997 and a two-story complex with a langar hall and classrooms in 2010. On the other side of the city, the Sacramento Sikh Society gurdwara on Bradshaw Road held its first Nagar Kirtan in 2023. Elk Grove elected Bobbie Singh-Allen as mayor in 2020, the first Punjabi American in that role. For brides, this is a region where families often travel between several towns for one wedding, and where Yuba City and the Bay Area are both within driving distance.
