A community built on peach farms
Punjabi families began farming around Yuba City in the 1950s and 1960s, many of them growing peaches. The Purewal brothers moved from grape farming in Lodi and bought their first plot near Yuba City in 1957. They later gave land for the gurdwara on Tierra Buena Road. Before it opened, families drove about three hours to Stockton to attend a gurdwara. Didar Singh Bains, one of California's largest peach growers, helped build many of the community's institutions. Today Yuba City is one of the places most closely linked with Punjabi life in America. For brides, that often means a big wedding with a lot of family, and a full set of events from the jaago to the doli. Plan your jewelry for each of those events early.
The Nagar Kirtan and wedding season
Yuba City's Nagar Kirtan began on November 9, 1980. Didar Singh Bains started it after seeing a Sikh parade in Canada. It marks the Guru Granth Sahib being given the status of Guru in 1708. It is usually held over a weekend in early November at Gurdwara Sahib Yuba City. In 2025 it ran from October 31 to November 2, and organizers expected 100,000 to 200,000 people. Check with the gurdwara for the 2026 dates before you plan travel. Many families have relatives flying in for the parade, so the weeks around it can be busy. If your wedding falls in the same season, order your chooda and kaleeras early so they are not stuck behind other plans.
Matching parandis for the jaago
Big Yuba City weddings often mean a crowd of sisters and cousins at the jaago. Matching parandis are an easy group order, and they photograph well when everyone is dancing together. Choose one color family and let each cousin pick her own shade, or match them exactly to the bride. Book one video call for the group and we can show colors side by side.
