Gurdwaras across the Bay
The Bay Area has three of the best known gurdwaras in the US. The Fremont Gurdwara on Gurdwara Road was established in 1978 and has more than 9,000 registered members from across the Bay Area and parts of the Central Valley. The Sikh Center in El Sobrante opened in 1979. Gurdwara Sahib of San Jose finished a $20 million expansion in 2011 and became the largest gurdwara outside India, on 40 acres in the Evergreen hills. For many Bay Area families, the Anand Karaj takes place at one of these, with the reception at a separate hall. Shubham Halls in Sunnyvale is one venue built for Indian weddings, with three halls of different sizes. With events spread across venues, plan which pieces you will wear where, and who will carry them between events.
When relatives bring pieces too
Bay Area weddings often bring together families from Fremont, San Jose, the Central Valley and further away. Relatives may be bringing jewelry from India or elsewhere as gifts. Find out early what is coming, so you do not double up. Then fill the gaps. Often that is the chooda and kaleeras, a haath phool, and lighter sets for the mehndi and jaago. Order your chooda first, since it needs the most care with sizing.
