Loudoun, Fairfax and Montgomery
Pew counted 192,000 Indians in the Washington metro area in 2017 to 2019. The newest census survey puts 52,677 Asian Indian residents in Fairfax County, 47,553 in Loudoun and 42,008 in Montgomery County, Maryland. Loudoun has its own milestones. In 2024 the 10th District, home to about 65,000 people of South Asian descent, elected Suhas Subramanyam, Virginia's first Indian American congressman. In January 2025, JJ Singh became the first Sikh member of the Virginia House of Delegates.
Gurdwaras and temples
The Sikh Foundation of Virginia began in Fairfax in 1978 and calls itself the first gurdwara in the state. Across the Potomac, the Guru Gobind Singh Foundation in Rockville has been called the largest gurdwara in the Washington area, and the Guru Nanak Foundation of America in Silver Spring holds a three day Vaisakhi with a nagar kirtan. In 2025 Maryland's governor proclaimed April 13 Khalsa Sajna Diwas. For Hindu families, the Durga Temple of Virginia in Fairfax Station opened in 1999, and the Sri Venkateswara Lotus Temple sits on close to 18 acres in Fairfax.
