A community built in fifty years

Kern County's Sikh community is younger than the one further north in the Valley. Naturalization records show no Sikhs in Kern until the 1960s and 1980s, first in Taft and Bakersfield. Many families came between the late 1970s and the 1990s and settled in southwest Bakersfield. Today the Jakara Movement estimates 30,000 to 40,000 Sikhs in the county. The oldest gurdwara, the Bakersfield Sikh Temple on South P Street, was built in the 1980s, and there are now seven. In 2022 Manpreet Kaur became the first Sikh Punjabi woman on the city council.

Two parades a year

Bakersfield has two big Sikh processions. In spring, more than 10,000 people came to southwest Bakersfield for the 19th annual parade in April 2023. In autumn, a Nagar Kirtan in south Bakersfield celebrates Guru Nanak. If your wedding falls near either one, family calendars fill up fast. Order the chooda and kaleeras early, and check your size before you do.

Gurdwaras

  • Bakersfield Sikh Temple (South P Street)
  • Gurdwara Guru Angad Darbar (Stine Road)
  • Gurdwara Guru Dashmesh Darbar (Wible Road)
