A growing Sikh community

The Sikh Coalition estimates that 8,000 to 10,000 Sikhs live in Indiana. Many families came for work in the auto and trucking industries, and some moved from California and Canada. Indianapolis has several gurdwaras. The Sikh Satsang of Indianapolis is the oldest and largest congregation in the state. Its Gurdwara 74 building on Southeastern Avenue opened in 2026, with a sanctuary hall that seats 1,500 people. Because many families have relatives in California, Canada and Punjab, Indianapolis weddings often have guests travelling from far away. That makes planning ahead even more important. Guests from different places may bring their own traditions too. Ask your elders early how your family does the chooda ceremony and the jaago, so your jewelry matches the plan.

Fewer local options, more planning

Indianapolis does not have a large South Asian shopping street like Devon Avenue in Chicago, which is about three hours away by car. Many brides here order some or all of their bridal jewelry online. That works well if you plan for it. Measure your bangle size carefully, since a chooda is rigid and has no clasp. Order early, since all sales are final. Ask to see pieces on the hand, not only in flat photos. Keep a list of every event and its pieces so nothing is missed in the final week.
