Little Punjab in Queens
Richmond Hill is often called Little Punjab. The Sikh Cultural Society opened the area's first gurdwara in 1972, and Punjabi families grew around it through the 1990s. After a fire in 2002, the current building was finished in 2004. The Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Sikh Center, founded in the late 1990s, stands a few blocks away on 101st Avenue. The city has marked this history on its street signs. In 2020, 101st Avenue between 111th and 123rd Streets was co-named Punjab Avenue, and part of 97th Avenue became Gurdwara Street. A section of 118th Street was named Guru Nanak Way in 2023, and in 2025 the corner of 114th Street and 101st Avenue was co-named for Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Shopping in the neighborhood
Brides in Richmond Hill and South Ozone Park have something many US brides do not. Shops are close by. Liberty Avenue has many sari and wedding wear stores, and 101st Avenue runs through the heart of the Punjabi community. Trying bangles on in person is the best way to learn your chooda size, so it is worth a visit even if you buy elsewhere. If you want a particular style or color that you cannot find nearby, ordering online gives you more choice. Many brides do both. They try on locally to confirm a size, then order the exact chooda, kaleeras or haath phool they want.
