Irving, Frisco and Plano

Dallas Fort Worth's Indian American community has grown fastest in the suburbs. Irving's Asian population nearly doubled between 2010 and 2020, to 57,504, and Asian Indians are its largest Asian group. Many live in west Irving, near the tech employers. Frisco's Asian population more than quadrupled in the same decade, to about a quarter of the city. Collin County, which takes in Frisco and Plano, had about 100,000 Indian American residents in 2021. One Frisco family told the local paper they moved from Plano to be closer to the Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple.

Temples and gurdwaras

The DFW Hindu Temple began as an idea in 1981, and its Ekta Mandir in Irving opened in 1991. In Frisco, the Karya Siddhi Hanuman Temple opened in 2015. North Texas had five gurdwaras and about 40,000 Sikhs by a 2012 count. In Irving, a new gurdwara opened on Vaisakhi in April 2013 with a Nagar Kirtan through the streets. The Sikh Temple of North Texas is in Garland, east of Dallas.

One wedding, several cities

A DFW wedding can spread across three or four cities. The mehndi might be in Frisco, the ceremony in Irving and the reception somewhere else. Keep a small labeled case for each event so nothing goes missing on the road. If you are short on time, settle the chooda before anything else. It is the one piece that has to fit exactly.

Gurdwaras

  • Gurdwara Nishkam Seva (Irving)
  • Sikh Temple of North Texas (Garland)

Mandirs

  • DFW Hindu Temple, Ekta Mandir (Irving)
