Sikh community in the Chicago area

An estimated 10,000 Sikhs live in the Chicago area. The Sikh Religious Society, incorporated in 1972, began with families meeting in each other's homes. It later bought land and opened its gurdwara in Palatine in 1979. Today it runs the largest gurdwara in the Midwest, on a campus of about fourteen acres in the northwest suburbs. Many Punjabi families in the region live in the suburbs and travel into the city to shop and eat. For brides, that often means an Anand Karaj at a suburban gurdwara and some wedding shopping on Devon Avenue. Winter weddings are common in the region too, so think about how your jewelry will look with a shawl or jacket over your outfit, and pick pieces that will not snag on heavier fabrics.

Devon Avenue

Devon Avenue on Chicago's North Side has been a South Asian shopping street for more than 50 years. Its first Indian store, a sari shop, opened in 1972. Patel Brothers opened the first Indian grocery there in 1974. Over time the street became a place where South Asian families from across the region come to shop for clothes, jewelry and food. If you are near Devon, it is worth visiting to try on bangles and see colors in person. If you cannot find the exact style you want, ordering online gives you more choice, and many brides combine the two. Take a photo of your outfit when you go.
