Oak Tree Road

Oak Tree Road runs for about a mile and a half through Iselin and on into Edison. It has more than 400 South Asian businesses and is known for its gold jewelry shops. Indian families began arriving in the early 1990s, and their shops helped revive a downtown that had been in decline. In 2023 Tanishq opened its first US store here. Each August the India Day Parade comes through, and Diwali is celebrated here every year. In 2022 Edison swore in Sam Joshi, its first Indian American mayor. For a bride, all this means a lot to see within a few blocks, and a lot of choice to sort through.

Sikh families in Carteret and Glen Rock

Carteret has the largest concentration of Sikhs in New Jersey. Its first gurdwara started in rented space in 1998 and moved to Port Reading in 2005. The borough has held a yearly Nagar Kirtan, with a flag raising at Borough Hall and langar in Carteret Park. In north Jersey, the Glen Rock gurdwara began with about ten families praying in a tent. Its building on Prospect Street went up in the 1990s, and it now draws hundreds of families from New Jersey and New York. Jersey City has its own Indian main street too, India Square on Newark Avenue, where Holi has been celebrated every spring since 1992.
