Sikh life in Kent and Renton
Sikhs have been part of Washington for more than a century, and in 2020 the State Senate passed a resolution honoring that history. Today most of the community lives in the suburbs south of Seattle. In 2017 a community leader put the number in Kent, Renton and Auburn at 8,000 to 10,000, and closer to 50,000 across the wider area. The Renton gurdwara opened in 1993 in a small wood frame building. By 1997 it had grown into a 23,000 square foot gurdwara. In 2017 Kent elected Satwinder Kaur, who grew up in the city, as its first Sikh council member.
Khalsa Day in Kent
The Renton gurdwara's yearly Nagar Kirtan starts and ends at the ShoWare Center in downtown Kent. On May 17, 2025, thousands filled the streets for the Khalsa Day celebration and parade, and the mayors of Kent, Auburn and Renton came. If your wedding is in April or May, relatives may plan their travel around it. Order your chooda and kaleeras early so they are not caught up in a busy month.
