A long Sikh history in the Valley
Sikh families have farmed the Central Valley for generations. Many early settlers lived around Kerman, Caruthers and Selma, and more families arrived after World War II and in the 1980s. The first gurdwara in the US opened in Stockton in 1912, and today the Valley has around 15. In Fresno, the Gurdwara Singh Sabha started on East Dakota Avenue and moved in 2012 to the Sikh Institute of Fresno, a 48,000 square foot complex on North Parkway Drive. Nearby, the San Joaquin Gurdwara, started in the early 1980s, was named Fresno County's first Sikh historical landmark in 2020. For many Valley families, these gurdwaras are where the Anand Karaj takes place, and where planning for the chooda, the jaago and the mehndi begins.
What Valley brides usually need
A Punjabi wedding has several events, and each one has its own jewelry. The chooda goes on the morning of the wedding, usually given by the bride's mama. Kaleeras are tied to the chooda by family and friends. A haath phool shows off bridal mehndi. For the mehndi night, light floral or gota sets keep you comfortable while you sit for hours. Valley summers are hot, so lighter pieces matter more than you might expect at outdoor events. Make a list of every event and what you will wear to each one. It is the easiest way to avoid a rush in the wedding week.
