The Mahatma Gandhi District

In January 2010 Houston became the first US city to name a major commercial area after Mahatma Gandhi. The district sits around Hillcroft Avenue and Harwin Drive in southwest Houston. Its roots go back to the 1980s. Jay Stores moved to Hillcroft in 1983 and Raja Sweets opened in 1985. Over time it became a center for saris and gold jewelry. If you are close by, go and try on bangles. Knowing your size makes ordering online much easier.

Gurdwaras and mandirs

Houston's Sikh history goes back to 1971, when about a dozen families first met in an apartment. Their gurdwara on Prairie Drive opened in 1973, and a state historical marker calls it the first in Texas. Sugar Land and southwest Houston families founded the Gurdwara Sahib of South West Houston in 2006. The Sikh National Center sits on the Sam Houston Tollway, near a stretch named for Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal, the first deputy in Texas allowed to wear a turban and beard in uniform. For Hindu families, the Sri Meenakshi Temple in Pearland hosts weddings on its 35 acre grounds, and the BAPS mandir in Stafford was the first traditional stone and marble mandir built in the US.

Dressing for Houston heat

Houston summers are long, hot and humid. For an outdoor mehndi or sangeet, lighter pieces are far kinder to wear. Gota and floral sets, one pair of statement earrings and a lighter maang tikka all help. Save the heavier set for the wedding itself, which is usually indoors. Fort Bend weddings often run across Sugar Land, Stafford and Pearland, so pack each event's pieces separately.
