Sikh and Punjabi life in metro Detroit
The Sikh Society of Michigan's gurdwara in Sterling Heights started in an old church building in 1979 and describes itself as the first in the Detroit area. It moved into a new building in 2012. In the western suburbs, Canton has two gurdwaras, Gurdwara Sahib on Canton Center Road and Gurdwara Gobind Marg on Michigan Avenue, and the local library describes the Sikh community as a large and very active part of Canton and Plymouth. There is also a gurdwara in Rochester Hills, and about a dozen across the state. Troy, Canton and Novi all have sizeable Indian American populations. Indian groceries and restaurants cluster along Ford Road in Canton and Garden City, Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills and Dequindre Road in Sterling Heights.
Close to Brampton
Metro Detroit is the closest large US Punjabi community to our studio. Brampton is roughly a four hour drive from the Detroit area via Windsor, depending on traffic and the border.
