Little India on Broadway

Hicksville's Indian shopping street began with one grocery. Rajesh and Geeta Kumar opened Modern Bazaar, and by 1999 there were at least 15 Indian businesses along a mile of South Broadway. The town has kept growing since. In the 2020 census, 32.3% of Hicksville residents were Asian, up from 8,139 people in 2010 to 14,178. The India Day Parade of Long Island started in 2012 and comes down Broadway each August. Hindu families gather at the AsaMai Hindu Temple in town, and in 2016 the first BAPS mandir on Long Island opened in Melville.

Gurdwaras on the North Shore

Long Island had about 10,000 Sikhs and three gurdwaras in 2014. The oldest, the Guru Gobind Singh Sikh Center in Plainview, opened in 1987 in a building that had been a church for decades. In Glen Cove, Gurdwara Mata Sahib Kaur sits in a Gilded Age mansion called Glenlo. Wherever your Anand Karaj is, plan the chooda first. It is rigid, has no clasp and needs the most care with sizing.
